World War I Centennial Concert Coming Nov. 10th

On November 10, 2017, the County Line Community Band will perform its World War I Remembrance Concert at the University of the Incarnate Word at 6:30 p.m. in the Luella Bennack Concert Hall.
100 years ago, the United States formally entered the “War To End All Wars,” so the band has partnered with the Texas World War I Commission to highlight the contributions music and Texans made in the war effort.
Also included will be a special feature presented by The Playhouse San Antonio, which will perform a short preview of its upcoming production, All is Calm — the Christmas Truce of 1914, which portrays the the story of World War I Soldiers who stopped fighting on the front lines and celebrated Christmas together — not as enemies, but as friends.
To support the War effort, musicians were drafted just like everyone else and they brought American music, particularly Jazz, to Europe. The famous African-American 369th Infantry Division “Hellfighters” Band brought jazz to the ears of the Parisians under the baton of their famous bandleader, James Reese Europe. The war gave birth to numerous famous songs from the era such as “Over There” and “St. Louis Blues.” All of these songs will be performed during the concert with historical background being presented by War re-enactors, historical displays by the San Antonio Public Library and memorabilia from the era. This event is free and open to the public.
The County Line Community Band’s mission and endeavor is to create an environment wherein our all-volunteer organization can further its musical education and enjoyment through the performance of concert and symphonic music, to further the efficacy of music as an integral piece of the local community’s culture, to advocate for the synergistic integration of music education in schools, to work with our cultural partners in our communities for the advancement of the arts and to be a source of pride for our members and the communities we serve.
